wow gold buy Aug. 31st, 2010 12:37 am En casa, but still need one last update!

Hello from Salem OR!

You may be wondering, hmmm some travel journal lame-face. you're in your hometown. you're not allowed to update from there. You are right. But I have many reasons why this update is necessary…

1. I can't sleep. I feel like it's 5pm, not 12am. Probably because it is 5pm in Australia.
2. I never updated about the end of my trip.
3. I need to finish up the trip because of my new BRILLIANT journal publishing idea and book I bought.
4. I just poured myself the rest of the wine bottle… I won't mention when I opened it.
5. This wins over the chick-flick marathon on FX that I was getting super sucked into about an hour ago.

So here we ready, set, go–

My last entry was from the Gold Coast. We left later that day that I updated. We didn't really bring our "A-game" in travel organization that day. (Example- waited at a bus stop for about an hour only to find out that our bus was never coming to that particular stop)  So by the time we got to Brisbane, we were pretty pooped. We still got to meet up with Naomi and Dave for dinner though. Ended up going to a gourmet burger place. We split 2 burgers, a salad and a side of fries between the four of us. (We are learning how to save money slowly but surely!)

On Thursday Amanda got up for a run and I stayed in bed. The End. hahahahaha.

No but really, she did and I did. Running is hard for me now that I am used to having super fun dance workouts. I get bored and my run turns into a merengue march. It's not a pretty sight.

Naomi came to our hotel after her baby yoga class. (cute, I know) We went for a quick lunch and "carbed-up" for our afternoon to come. Rented bicycles and rode them around the Botanical Gardens and near the water. Super fun! Brisbane is definitely made for pedestrians and bikers. They have a couple of beautiful pedestrian only bridges. I was impressed. We have one of those in Salem, we need more!
So bike rides, sore bums and a scoop of gelato later, we were off for our next activity- a hike to the lookout of the city. We missed our bus though so this hike turned into a bus ride to Naomi's apartment. We waited for Dave to get off and then walked to a really yummy pizza joint and had the works- appetizer, pizza, desert. AMAZING.

On Friday us girls all caught the early train to a town outside of Brisbane called "Cleveland". From there it was a bus, a ferry and then another bus to get to "North Stradbroke Island". So worth the trip! It was absolutely beautiful. Sparkling turquiose water, big rocky cliffs, tons of wildlife! We hiked along the coast and saw TONS of whales, dolphins and sea turtles! It was the perfect conclusion to a great trip.

Australia is a beautiful country… love the nature and the wildlife…. and the weather! Was it really supposed to be winter there? Sure didn't seem like it. (I'm not an Oregon fan in that way, I just LOVE the sun) Everyone in Australia is super friendly. I actually got upset during
my layover in LAX when I observed how rude some people were to eachother. in Burger King. Then, right after, I sat down and shared a table and some chicken nuggets with 3 Aussie Elders and we were instant friends talking about traveling, jobs, life, and laughing a ton. I'm not saying that all Australians are friendly and all people from the States are not… but I do think we (Americans)  need to learn to come out of our individualistic, ego-centric bubble a little bit. Wow, ok… allow me to step off my soap box and down the last drop of wine in my glass.

On a different note, I have one complaint about this trip. I had 0% culture shock… which i thrive off of when I travel. Everything seemed so familiar, so easy. The only hard thing was learning how to walk on the left side of the sidewalk. It's hard coming from experiences like Argentina, Spain and Italy where the language, food, fashion, people, timeliness, and overall "feel" of the country is a moving experience in itself to going somewhere so far away yet so similar to my life back here. Just my thoughts.

I wonder where the next plane I get on will take me.

A man and his dog were walking along a road.
The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.
He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years.
He wondered where the road was leading them.
After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road.
It looked like fine marble..
At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.
When he was standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold.
He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.
When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'
'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.
'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.
'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.'
The man gestured, and the gate began to open. 'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveller asked.
'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'
The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.
After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed.
There was no fence. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book….
'Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'
'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'
'How about my friend here?' the traveller gestured to the dog.
'There should be a bowl by the pump,' said the man.
They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it.
The traveller filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog.
When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.
'What do you call this place?' the traveller asked.
'This is Heaven,' he answered.
'Well, that's confusing,' the traveller said.
'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'
'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'
'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'
'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'

Glitches Turn Video Games Into Sublime Art

First, he showed us the edge of the world. Now, photographer Robert Overweg shows us some beautiful mistakes.

Most people throw their controllers when a glitch ruins a perfectly good game of Half Life or Grand Theft Auto. Robert Overweg loves it; he turns it into art.

Overweg is a self-proclaimed “photographer in the virtual world.” In his “Glitches” series, he captures whacked-out characters and snafued buildings in screenshots that look like what René Magritte might've produced had he been a big ol' gaming nerd. These are absurd apocalyptic landscapes rendered even more absurd by shooters suspended in mid-air, as if leaping off a trampoline, while a skyscraper burns ominously in the distance, or, our favorite, by two characters fleeing the zombies of Left 4 Dead 2 and pausing for a homoerotic embrace (top).

How Overweg does it: It's “a combination of forcing glitches and finding them,” he tells us in an email. So in Left 4 Dead 2, an A.I. companion is programmed to follow you within certain bounds, but step outside the bounds, and the characters go a tad haywire. Thus Glitch-hug and Glitch up in the air (below)

Here in Grand Theft Auto IV, Overweg used an invisible gap in the wall to effectively slip beneath the game.

Not all the photographs are glitches in the technical sense. Overweg found this facade hacking around Left 4 Dead 2. “I was told to go in a certain direction and I decided to go in the opposite only to find this beautiful building,” he says. “From a distance and a certain perspective this would be a normal building.” Facades and buildings from Half Life 2:

Aestheticizing glitches is nothing new, and in recent years, an entire industry has sprouted up around glitch art, complete with a glitch-art symposium and a glitch-art book. Most of the work looks like a mistake. Overweg's photos are awesome and creepy because, like Magritte's bowler-hatted men and day-lit evening streets, they're deceptively normal.

You could read all sorts of meaning into these — they're a political statement about finding beauty in crossing boundaries; they're questioning the notion of artistic authorship (Overweg's photos are unedited screenshots); and so on — but we like them because they look cool. We'll leave all that other stuff to the glitch-art theorists.

New Web Service Helps Lazy Parents Spy On Kids' Little League Games

Want to be over-involved in your child's life, but can't spare the time it takes to smother them with attention? A service for you: A company is installing webcams at Little League games, so parents can watch from their phones.

It's called Youth Sports Live, and will help you monitor your child's every screw-up at the base, according to the New York Times:

Youth Sports Live is striking deals with local leagues around the country to make that possible by installing and maintaining Webcams at local baseball and softball fields. Games can be replayed on demand. Subscribers to the site are charged $14.95 per month or can buy access for an entire season. They can also purchase games on DVD for $19.95.

Wow! Soon, this conversation will be occurring in suburban kitchens everywhere:

FATHER: So, Timmy, saw you missed a pretty easy fly ball today at the game. What happened, buddy?
TIMMY: Wait, you weren't there. How… how did you know?
FATHER: Oh, I was on spying on you from a nearby rooftop.
TIMMY: …
FATHER: Just kidding! I subscribe to a service that records all of your games on a webcam. Now if they could only put one of those little guys in the bathroom. What the hell do you DO in there for hours?

Aion

August 26, 2010

Tweet Can a video game publisher be successfully sued for releasing a game that makes players want to play it compulsively? That's the question of the hour in the USA, as Lineage II player Craig Smallwood levied a $3 million negligence suit against NCsoft for making the game too addictive. Smallwood found himself playing the MMO for over 20,000 hours in the last five years, to the point where he is unable to function normally in real life — and he claims it's NCsoft's fault for not warning him in advance. Smallwood's gameplay averaged around 11 hours per day during that period.

Surprisingly, a federal judge has allowed the suit to proceed against the South Korean publisher, stating that “the court finds that plaintiff has stated a claim for both negligence and gross negligence.” NCsoft has appealed and asked the judge to dismiss the case. The situation gets more interesting when you consider that Smallwood had his Lineage II accounts banned for alleged grey market RMT activity, although he claims that was a ploy by NCsoft to force players like himself to move over to Aion.

Video game addiction is no new issue, to be sure, but it's interesting that this case seeks to shift the blame from the player to the game company itself. This raises a whole host of new questions. Should publishers be required to slap their products with warning labels? Is there no personal responsibility when it comes to playing MMORPGs? We will have to wait and see if Smallwood's suit succeeds, and what, if any, fallout may occur from the attempt.

That is exactly what the Balaur should have been, and pretty much what I was expecting. I thought they'd be very active and fortress sieges would most often be groups of both Asmodians and Elyos attacking Balaur controlled forts, with the two human controlled sides having to work together at first, fighting through to the heart of the fortress, then picking the right time to fight both Balaur and the other faction for actual control. Once a fort was taken, it would be a matter of trying to hold it against hordes of Balaur and perhaps players from the other side as well.

Based on the end of beta events, I was also expecting Balaur mini-invasions of the other zones as well. Fighting the Balaur in Morheim was a lot of fun, especially when the Elyos showed up in the middle of it and we had groups fighting both. There were even Mau wandering just outside Altgard Fortress we needed to hunt down (none made it inside during the main part of the attack, at least not at the gate I was helping defend).

Not to mention I thought rifting would be much more restricted, so that people leveling wouldn't be constantly ganked by high level rifters.

Didn't really get any of that, just lazy Balaur, no mini-invasions, and lots of ganking.

The Case:  Matt Moore versus Jimmy Clausen

Matt Moore was handed the reins to Carolina’s offense after Jake Delhomme’s long, downward spiral finally came to an end last season. It became very evident to everyone around the NFL, including the Panthers’ brass that it was time to get a glimpse of the future, which comes in the form of Matt Moore.

He led the Panthers to a four and one record in the final five games of the season, and looked surprisingly poised while running the offense. Moore wound up with a very solid QB rating of 98.5, eight touchdowns to two interceptions and a completion percentage of 61.6.

While it is true that this is a rather small sample size, Moore still managed to end up with a higher QB rating than a few big-name QB’s you may have heard of (Tony Romo, Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Eli Manning and Donovan McNabb).

When draft day rolled around and Jimmy Clausen was passed over by every team (some twice), Carolina could not resist. The Panthers snagged him in the second round with the 16th pick. His selection seemed to signal the eventual end of the Matt Moore era in Carolina without even as much as a full season to prove himself.

Clausen comes to Carolina as a polished player who had experience in a pro-style offensive scheme under Coach Charlie Weis at Notre Dame. In almost three full seasons as a starter, Clausen threw for 8,148 yards and 60 TD (3,722 yards, 28 TD and 161.43 rating in ’09). He was the third rated passer in D-1 football behind Tim Tebow and Kellen Moore.

The Verdict:

It appears as though Carolina will get Clausen as much playing time as possible in the preseason. In the first preseason game, Clausen went 8-15 for 80 yards with an INT while Moore was in for only three possessions. Both Clausen and Moore had problems with protection and penalties by the offensive line so it was tough to gauge either QB’s performance.

While they are not in a huge rush to get him under center for the regular season, it’s become apparent that Clausen is the QB of the future in Carolina. Moore is viewed more as a stopgap player who will keep the starting QB spot warm for Clausen, who has a higher ceiling than Moore. Once Moore starts to stumble or Carolina falls out of playoff contention, Clausen is sure to get the call later this season and should be ready to fly for 2011.

Here's the bit from the interview that's making waves at all the ffxiv sites:

F: Tell why you decided to implement Fatigue and Latency (note: I really don't know how to translate that, but it's something in-game to keep you from playing too long at a time on one class).

DK: We'd like you to think of it as a reward to those players who don't have much time to commit to the game. Those hardcore players out there might think it's a little unfair, but the main concept behind it is that you don't need to put in massive amounts of time to enjoy the game.

F: Still though, there are a lot of disgruntled looks coming from those hardcore gamers.

DK: For those who have more time on their hands, they'll be able to try out all the various classes. Fatigue doesn't carry over when you change weapons, so we hope that they'll try out not just battle-oriented classes but maybe some crafting or gathering ones as well. So for those who end up with many high-level classes, they'll have more choices when it comes to any situation, whether solo or party play

Now that people know what surplus EXP is intended for and that it's not just some beta thing, there's lots of unhappy people.

Diablo III

August 24, 2010

Blizzard isn't officially working on a console title, but Diablo III is a likely candidate if it does in the future.

This generation's consoles have had big sales and are the current focus of many developers and publishers above the PC. Blizzard Entertainment is one of the world's most prominent exceptions to that rule thanks to its huge success with PC-exclusives like World of Warcraft and most recently StarCraft II. However, if Blizzard were to step into the console realm, it already has a game that it thinks would be the best fit.

Blizzard's Jay Wilson told CVG that the game he's currently the director for, Diablo III, would likely be a good console title. He said: “I do agree that of all our titles, Diablo would be the easiest to bring over – mainly because of the controls.”

Blizzard Entertainment hasn't released a game on a console since the '90s, when it did titles such as The Lost Vikings and Blackthorne on the Super Nintendo (EDIT: Whoops, Diablo and Warcraft II were released on the PlayStation, though they weren't published by Blizzard. StarCraft was released for the N64, but also not handled by Blizzard). StarCraft: Ghost was the studio's last planned console game but it never made it to a retail release.

A version of Diablo on consoles would certainly fit, as we've already seen similar titles like Sacred 2 on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance on the PlayStation 2, Xbox, and Gamecube. Diablo is the most popular of the hack-and-loot genre, so it seems it would not only work well on a console, but also sell a copy or two.

Unfortunately, Wilson also reiterated that Blizzard has no plans to port Diablo yet, but that doesn't mean the topic hasn't come up. “I'd be lying if I said we never talk about it,” he said. “But it's not something we're pursuing right now.”

Even though Wilson says Diablo's controls are most suited out of all of its series for a console port, the mouse-and-keyboard is still superior as I see it, so maybe this is why Blizzard chooses to focus on making the best PC experience possible. Adapting a PC-oriented control scheme to a gamepad never seems to feel right, and Blizzard sells plenty of games on the PC, so why bother watering it down?

Diablo III Fans, You Better Prepare for BlizzCon

Blizzard hasn't been very talkative at this week's Gamescom show, preferring to hold all of their big news for October's BlizzCon convention.

While Blizzard did talk a bit about their new artisan system for Diablo III, they remained mostly tight-lipped about the game at the show, not even bringing a new build of the game to Cologne this year for the public demo.

But it sounds like a lot of news may be just around the corner.

“This will be our biggest BlizzCon ever” for Diablo III, game director Jay Wlson told Kotaku.

With no release date for the game, and at least one class to unveil, it sounds like late October could be an exciting time for fans of the game.

In China, it appears the Internet’s wild west possibilities have often been tamed by the goverment’s mediation. While people look to ways to getting around it, the Chinese World of Warcraft gaming community has made a special film, War of Intenet Addiction, that utilizes machinima as a narrative that addresses much of the plight of these users.

We Make Money Not Art reports:

The main frustration of mainland Chinese WoW players is that the access to the game has been limited and interrupted for months because of a conflict between two government regulatory bodies. The video also denounces battles and issues that took place in China over the previous 15 months or so: electroshock therapy for purported internet addiction (the Health Ministry has mercifully asked for the treatment to stop); the government’s attempts to enforce installations on all new pc sold in mainland China of the Green Dam Youth Escort filter; the competition between the county’s primary game servers over licensing renewal rights, etc.

While the film does address some heady issues, it is ladened with many obscure Chinese memes and references. With that said, it’s hard to not see parallels between other Internet activist groups like Anonymous in their ability to appropriate humor and entertainment in the name of activism. This is not to say that there aren’t specific differences to these groups. However, there is a sense of overall unification between the approaches and social behavior born out of niche communities on the Internet — irregardless of nationality.

The full film is available in seven parts here; to understand all of the film’s references, special documentation may be found here.

War of Internet Addicition

We Make Money Not Art: “War of Internet Addicition”

Blizzard Entertainment took the stage here at Comic-Con in San Diego to talk about World of Warcraft-inspired merchandise, and when the topic of the WoW movie came up during the Q&A, Vice President of Creative Development Chris Metzen confirmed that though the process has slowed recently, the movie is still happening. Director Sam Raimi is still “very, very passionate” about getting the movie made, but Metzen said that a treatment is still being hammered out. If that gets approved, he said, then “hopefully it'll start moving very quickly, very soon.”

Metzen and the rest of the panelists also talked about the next lore-based novel to be released — it's called The Shattering, and will set up a lot of the events leading up to the Cataclysm expansion. Metzen cautioned the game's fans that there are “dark times ahead” for Azeroth with the return of Deathwing and quakes destroying large parts of the game world. “It's going to get rough out there for a while,” he admitted. “But there's a plan. The great heroes always rise to the top.”
